This August, Camp Isabella Freedman will celebrate its 70th anniversary, welcoming adults ages 55 and older to a unique 10-day summer experience that combines recreation, lifelong learning, spirituality, creativity and community in the beauty of northwestern Connecticut.
“People come for the beautiful setting and engaging programs, but they return for the sense of belonging and joy they find here,” said Camp Director Miki Raver.
Founded in 1956, Camp Isabella Freedman has become a cherished summer tradition for generations of older adults seek
ing connection, enrichment and renewal. The camp is located at Isabella Freedman Jewish Retreat Center on 400 acres in the Connecticut Berkshires, two hours from New York City and three hours from Boston. Raver brings 11 years of experience leading Camp Isabella Freedman and has an extraordinary mix of programs lined up for this 70th anniversary year.
Campers from across the country will enjoy yoga, music by performer Laura Wetzler, art history workshops with Natanya Blank on “Jewish Legacy in the History of Art: Chagall to Pissarro” and creative writing sessions led by author Robin Finn. There will also be traditional summer camp activities including swimming, boating, hiking and Shabbat celebrations, all with Adamah’s renowned kosher farm-to-table cuisine. Every meal is buffet style with vegetarian and gluten-free options, cooked fresh with fruits and vegetables from Isabella Freedman’s on-site 20-acre organic farm. The kitchen and dining room are glatt kosher under supervision of the Hartford Kashrut Commission.
Roberta and Bernie Horowitz from Riverdale are two campers who leave camp each year longing to return.
