Introducing Adamah Adventure Camp

Adamah, whose headquarters are located at Pearlstone in Reisterstown, Maryland, is excited to announce a relaunch of Pearlstone’s day camp and overnight camp. The camp, formerly known as Tiyul, will now be called Adamah Adventure Camp, with more choice, more camp spirit, and more ADVENTURE!

Why Adamah? Adamah is the Hebrew word for earth. We believe in the ancient Jewish teaching that people (adam) and planet (adamah) are one, and we help campers develop awareness of and celebrate our interconnectedness.

Why Adventure? Our counselors and campers are venturing together on a journey to discover amazing things about the land, life’s lessons, and themselves.

The name change reflects the new feeling for camp. We want campers to jump out of bed each morning, lace up their hiking boots, put on their backpacks, and think to themselves, “Adventure awaits!”

Leora Match, Camp Director

The day camp will run for seven weeks, and each week will have a different theme. Picture a giant tracking game in the forest for Jedi Week, or protecting our planet (we only have one!) from space invaders during Alien Invasion Week. There will be traditional camp activities including free swim, creek walks, farm-to-table cooking, lunchtime song circles, and a Shabbat Party. Each day, campers will help food scraps, recyclable materials, or other waste along its breakdown journey—learning about sustainability with a spectacle, through the “Break Down Breakdown”!

The Break Down Breakdown

Put your hand in a jar of red-wriggler worms, slingshot a watermelon across the lake into a compost bucket, smash a pumpkin with a sledgehammer–we will “Break It Down!”

We are offering two overnight camp experiences.

  • Nature Exploration is for incoming 4th thru 9th graders, and is our traditional overnight experience with amazing specialists, awareness games, wild edible plant identification, night hikes, farm-to-table cooking, high ropes course and zipline, free swim, and more.
  • Advanced Skills is for incoming 8th thru 12th graders who are passionate and focused, and interested in making and learning to use high-quality tools (this year’s tracks: Bow/Arrow + Knife-Making OR Wilderness Survival). An objective of this camp is to build independence, so campers sleep in their own tents in the Wilderness Village and help prepare many of their meals.

I’ve been in the Jewish camp world my whole life, and can tell you that this camp, leadership and vision is something powerful, growing and transformative. The name change is a natural consequence of the metamorphosis and elevation of programming and mission that our camps are going through.
