Siach, an Environment and Social Justice Conversation, brings together committed activists from across Israel, North America, and Europe.

We’ve already seen the impact from last year’s conference around the world, as partnerships have been forged between great organizations. The René Cassin Fellows Program was founded by representatives of René Cassin and Clal. René Cassin is a human rights NGO that uses the experience of the Jewish people, and positive Jewish values, to campaign and educate on universal human rights issues such as discrimination, detention, and genocide. Clal, The National Jewish Center for Learning and Leadership, is a leadership training institute, think tank, and resource center.
When Simone Abel of Rene Cassin and Rabbi Sid Schwartz of Clal first ran into each other at Limmud, they had the sense that they might enjoy working together. But it wasn’t until the Siach Conference that they found the time to meet, get to know each other, sit down, and start seriously discussing ideas for trans-Atlantic collaboration. The idea for the René Cassin Fellows Program (RCFP) was born out of that conversation.

Tu B’Shvat begins Sundown on February 7, 2012

Tu B’Shvat (Hebrew: ט״ו בשבט) is a minor Jewish holiday in the Hebrew month of Shvat, usually sometime in late January or early February, that marks the “New Year of the Trees” (Hebrew: ר×ש ×”×©× ×” ל××™×œ× ×•×ª, Rosh HaShanah La’Ilanot‎). Tu B’Shvat is one of four “New Years” mentioned in the Mishnah. Customs include planting trees and eating dried fruits and nuts, especially figs, dates, raisins, carob, and almonds. In Israel, the flowering of the almond tree, which grows wild around the country, coincides with Tu B’shvat.

The Jewish mystics loved this holiday, the day in midwinter when the sap begins to rise in the trees. On this day, the bodily sefirot (basically, the Jewish chakras — or for chemistry fans, the periodic table of spiritual elements) would open, allowing Divine light to energize and renew our connection to our bodies and the earth. How exactly did this happen?
It was all about a mysterious combination of fruit, wine and chocolate. OK, they didn’t have chocolate. But we will.

The acute deterioration in Israel’s environmental conditions is only part of the social agenda which brought one million Israelis to demonstrations this summer. Are we seeing a change in the Israeli political map and the public’s ecological awareness? What policies are needed to address the steady damage to Israel’s open spaces, biodiversity loss, the disappearing Dead Sea and myriad public health insults? Alon Tal, recognized by the Haaretz newspaper as Israel’s leading environmentalist, and a founder and co-chair of Israel’s new green party will present a new “green” agenda for Zionism and consider scenarios for progress in Israel.
