Hazon Presents Vision Award to Three in Chicago

I had the pleasure of spending last weekend with the Cross-USA Ride as it traveled throughChicago and we had an absolutely amazing time. Among other things, we visited Pushing the Envelope Farm and learned about fermentation, spent a morning harvesting at the KAM Isaiah Israel’s gardens, and had an afternoon of learning around the topics of feasting, fasting, and Tisha B’Av at The Gan Project. These organizations are working to create healthier and more sustainable Jewish communities, as steps towards a healthier and more sustainable world for everybody, and should be recognized for their efforts.

We had the honor of meeting their founders—The Margulies Family, Robert Nevel, and Jill Zenoff—and awarding them with Hazon Vision Awards. These awards recognize the groundbreaking work and deep impact these organizations are having on their local communities as they create a healthy and more sustainable world. We’re incredibly proud to be meeting the people who are doing this work on the ground, and to include their stories as part of our 2012 Hazon Cross-USA Ride, in which our riders are learning about sustainable food systems and visiting farms and food producers all across the country.

We wish them all congratulations and I encourage you to read about their projects.

Cross-USA Ride Week 8
From Chicago to Dayton

This week, the ride began in Chicago, stopped in Indianapolis, ends in Dayton and Columbus. See the itinerary.

Next week, the riders dip into West Virginia and make their way to Pittsburgh, resting up for their last week of riding.

Two weeks ago, I had the pleasure of speaking with Rabbi Paula Winnig, Executive Director of the Bureau for Jewish Education in Indianapolis. At 101 years old, the BJE is the oldest continually active interdenominational Hebrew School in America. In addition to covering the traditional Hebrew School topics, Rabbi Winnig’s curriculum integrates food at every opportunity: The older children learn about agriculture in Israel and enjoy Israeli breakfasts on occasion and the pre-schoolers learn about compost!

Colorado Tour De Farm Bike Ride

8 AM – 1 PM

Join Ekar Farm and Hazon for a 16-mile ride from Ekar Farm to Delaney Farm and back along the High Line Canal Bike Path. It’s a fun family bike ride “through the breadbasket of Denver!”

The ride stops at Sprout City Farm at Denver Green School for a tour, then on to Delaney Farm for another tour and fresh peaches, and then back to Ekar for grilled Colorado Olathe corn and live Bluegrass music.

Portland Tuv Ha’Aretz Presents: Why Should You Care About the Farm Bill?

Come learn more about the Farm Bill and how its policies impact your daily food choices. Nancy Becker, food and nutrition advocate, will give an overview of the Farm Bill and how it affects all citizens, farmers and eaters alike.

“Where do you Give” Curriculum

New, free curriculum from AJWS!

[Image]This week, American Jewish World Service released its first-ever school curriculum, called Where Do You Give? A Tzedakah Curriculum. The curriculum is innovative and interactive and challenges students to think carefully and intentionally about tzedakah. It’s designed for middle school students but can certainly be adapted for older students as well. AJWS also partnered with the Jewish Teen Funders Network and Babaganewz to create these resources.
