New York Ride & Retreat Keynote Announced

[IMG Photo Alt]Creating a Fair Food Future

During Shabbat at the New York Ride and Retreat, we’ll offer various sessions in which participants can learn more about their food choices.

Keynote: Three panelists will discuss how our current food system operates and what changes must be made to ensure a fair food future. The panel, moderated by Judith Belasco, Hazon’s Food Program Director, will feature:

  • Ruth Messinger, President of AJWS, focusing on international food systems
  • Karin Fleisch, formerly of Food Bank For New York, focusing on urban food systems
  • Gary Oppenheimer from AmpleHarvest.org, focusing on alternative food systems

Book Club: The New York Ride Book Club has everyone reading Kosher Nation by Sue Fishkoff. This engaging and fascinating book explores “why more and more of America’s food answers to a higher authority.” On Friday evening after dinner, participants can choose from five book club leaders to discuss the book and the issues it raises.

Registration is still open for riders and support crew!  If you cannot come for the entire weekend, we offer options to attend for Shabbat only or to join us for a one-day ride on Monday.

Special Promotion! The next 30 riders to register receive 30% off registration. Use the discount code  “30riders”

Israel Ride Touring Options Announced

Jerusalem to Eilat, November 8th – 15th

[IMG Photo Alt]The Israel Ride is more than just a bike ride – it’s a week-long fully supported tour of Israel, complete with hotel accommodations, great food, expert tour guides, and a wonderful community of cyclists.

Our shortest route option offers a unique blend of cycling and touring. Each day, this group will ride for half a day, typically until our lunch stop, and then spend the afternoon on a tour of nearby points of interest before returning to the hotel to rejoin the rest of [IMG JNF]the group for dinner. For the second time, the Israel Ride is proud to partner with the Jewish National Fund, who will be organizing the first two days of touring.

The 2011 Israel Ride will be held November 8-15 and includes five cycling days from Jerusalem to Eilat. Riders pay a registration fee and raise a minimum level of sponsorship to benefit Hazon and the Arava Institute. Note that the registration fee will increase on August 1st from $499 to $575.

Seasonal Delights at the Hazon Food Conference

[IMG Food at the Food Conference]For the first time in the history of the Food Conference, we are fortunate to be enjoying produce at the peak of the summertime harvest. UC Davis has sourced an incredible amount of local produce for us from the many farms that surround the campus.

Menu highlights include:

  • Vegetables from the UC Davis Student Farm Market Garden, grown on site by UC Davis students
  • Rue and Forsman organic rice (brown and white!), grown 50 miles from campus
  • Dwelley Farms white and yellow sweet corn and Blue Lake green beans, grown 50 miles from campus in Brentwood by Mark Dwelley, his father, and his grandfather, who have been farming there since the 1920s
  • Yellow peaches from Stephen’s Ranch in Yuba City, 50 miles away
  • Plums from EGB Ranch in Escalon, tree-ripened by Ed Chavez for exceptional flavor
  • Heirloom tomatoes from Capay Organics
  • Humane certified cage-free eggs from Glaum Ranch in Santa Cruz, CA and Abbotsford Farms, WI
  • Milk and dairy products from Clover Stornetta Dairy and Straus Creamery
  • Honey from John Foster Apiaries in Sacramento.  John is owner and operator of the business started years ago by his father Walt Foster.

Additionally, we’ll be serving 100% Grass-Fed Kosher Beef from KOL Foods at our Friday BBQ.

While more than 75 presenters will help us to nourish our minds and our souls throughout the Conference, ten hearty meals will make sure our bellies are full and satisfied!

Announcing a New Hazon Website

[IMG Photo Alt]We’re proud to unveil a new look and feel for the Hazon website! After many months of planning, designing, and taking into account feedback from folks like you, we’ve upgraded to a much more modern and fully-featured website.

You’ll find our signature events like the Food Conference and New York Ride & Retreat rotating right on the home page as well as listed in the “programs” drop down menu in the header of every page. Above the menu you’ll find a search button to help you find exactly what you’re looking for.

Under “resources,” you’ll find our great free offerings such as the Food Guide and tips for safe cycling. On our home page below the “fold,” you’ll see we’ve introduced a Hazon blog to compliment the Jew and the Carrot and to feature news and updates. Feel free to comment!

This is just a taste of the new website, and we encourage you to explore and share your feedback with us. As our previous website grew with us, we expect this new website to evolve Hazon does to meet the needs of the community.

Vote for Hazon in Citgo’s Fueling Good Summer Charity Contest

[IMG fueling Good]Citgo wants to know “How far can a gallon of gas go?” We’re hoping to take it across the United States in support of our cyclists.

Every Hazon ride provides support to its cyclists. This means transporting people and gear in cars and trucks. The cost of fuel is rising and that raises the overhead of running a Hazon ride. This in turn means less money for our grant recipients.
